The Mind Children interactive fiction

Screen shot of the Inform7 version of The Mind Children game

I'm writing a text-based adventure based on The Mind Children using (almost) period software - The Quill for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. It's been quite a journey, with various manuals that didn't match the version I was using, and scanned OCR manuals with errors in, but I am getting close. I hope to embed it in a simulator, and perhaps even make some cassette artwork and fix up my old ZX Spectrum to play it on.

While I am working on the 48K ZX Spectrum version, you can play an early version online here. It was written in Inform 7, a platform I've used a couple of times before, years ago (during lockdown I expect) to write an interactive fiction (text-based adventure) about being a BBC World Service studio manager in Bush House ('where do you get your ideas from?') and another one based in the world of an historical novel I was very much failing to finish writing.

The Inform 7 version of The Mind Children is not a huge game but I hope there are enough challenges and pitfalls to keep you amused.

Move in differrent directions with N, S, NW, SW etc.

Pick things up with 'get shandy' for example.

Type 'i' to get an inventory of what you are carrying.

Remember to examine things for clues.

You can also 'save' and 'restore' if you want to come back to it at a later date.

There may be a seventh episode in this in which Bob or Dave stumble upon a cassette at a car boot fair... now would it be a terrible idea to put the audio of the ZX Spectrum program at the end of the episode? After all, they used to broadcast software on the radio...

Page from a 1980s IBA year book about ILR stations broadcasting software over the air on programmes like 'Datarama' on Radio West in Bristol.
